<p>Yes, you need to help a lot of people to get the amount of referrals that will sustain your business without advertising, but you are doing more harm to yourself than good with this mindset.</p>
<p>You need to think about the quality of conversation, not the number of conversations you have each week.</p>
<p>Remember back to that last conference you attended or networking meeting. Think about the people you remember and are willing to open an email or take a call from them.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the people that left an impression on you that you give your time to. Maybe they had a great story or they asked amazing questions.</p>
<p>Whatever it was that stuck with you, that&#8217;s the type of of networking you need to be emulating.</p>
<p>We talked about the key concepts of networking at Tuesday&#8217;s (2pm ET) <a href="http://tweetchat.com/room/mktgchat" target="_blank">#mktgchat</a>. <p>A lot of people feel weird about networking because they don&#8217;t create the right mindset. You need to look at networking as a way of sharing your superpowers. You do this by asking great questions, finding their pain points and seeing how you can help them.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s about connecting instead of pushing yourself on to them.</p>

<p>Everyone struggles with networking.</p>
<p>No one has it easy. Even the &#8220;A&#8221; players struggle with how to filter out the losers that are just trying to use them instead of giving mutual value.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t worry about how hard it is to network, instead focusing on creating a system that works for you. Maybe every M, W, F you send out emails from 9am &#8211; 10am and make calls from 10am &#8211; 11am. I&#8217;ve actually implemented this system for a few weeks now and because I&#8217;m staying consistent with it I&#8217;m seeing results.</p>
<p>Jason Freedman talks about why his first business failed:</p>

<p>You have to figure out what works best for you, keep improving your system and never give up because your network will determine how successful you will become.</p>

<p>Pressure can often throw us off our networking game. We think we need to press a little to get a sale or develop a friendship. This  is one of the worst mindsets to have when trying to build a relationship.</p>
<p>You need to focus on listening and allowing the relationship to develop as appropriate. This just takes time and some people won&#8217;t be ready to trust you for months or even years. That&#8217;s why a frugal business can whether the ebb and flows of referrals that come in or don&#8217;t come in.</p>

<p>When you are trying to build relationships with people you can&#8217;t ever think that you are bothering them. I know that it&#8217;s hard not to feel this way, but you have to believe that you can help them.</p>
<p>I think the key takeaway from this string of conversation is knowing what you do well, and figuring out if the bigger player that you want to build a relationship with can use your expertise. That may mean asking them what they need help with. For my own business I like to keep track of people&#8217;s launches. If I know they have a new product or a re-release of a product then I send an email and gently remind them how much I can help them.</p>
<p>You can never bully your way into a relationship, so it&#8217;s best to keep reaching out when appropriate and let them know that you have this amazing superpower that they would be a fool to ignore.</p>

<p>You might be afraid to reach out to someone bigger than you, but this fear will hold your business back. You know you do great work otherwise you wouldn&#8217;t own your own business. You have to understand this fear and try to create a relationship with someone that you know can help your business.</p>
<p>Next time you think an A-lister in your industry could use your help, but you are procrastinating in reaching out, take a step back and write down all the positive things you can do for them. After finishing the list use this as motivation to reach out and try to make a connection.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll be glad that you took the risk and even if you don&#8217;t hear anything back, put it on your calendar to reach out to them in 2-4 weeks depending on your industry. By staying in touch in a polite and passionate way you&#8217;ll be staying top of mind when they need someone with your expertise.</p>

<p>Your ability to research who will be a good connection for you is a skill you must develop. I know many entrepreneurs who have reached out to the wrong people and tried to go after the wrong type of people for their business. Only when they switched to a different industry did they start to build relationships that helped them grow their business.</p>

<p>Then go grab some coffee or tea and check out this case study on how to create an amazing event that ripples out into the world.</p>
<p>Danielle LaPorte and Linda Sivertsen threw a Twitter party for their product, <a href="http://partybizconnect.com/your-big-beautiful-book-plan-teleseminar-and-twitter-party/">Your Big Beautiful Book Plan on January 18<sup>th</sup></a>. The party was a huge success. I want to share why.</p>
<p>Danielle and Linda created an information product to help writers become published authors. They put a whole amazing package of mp3s, tips, sample query letters and so much more all into one big ebook. It was a great product to throw a Twitter party around.<br />

<strong>Here are some of the hard data from the party:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Tweets during party with #bookplan hashtag -<strong> 766 tweets</strong>.<strong></strong></li>
<li>Total tweets with #bookplan hashtag from the day we announced the party to the day after -<strong> 1,387 tweets</strong>.<strong></strong></li>
<li>Number of people who dialed in to the conference call -<strong> 116 people</strong>.<strong></strong></li>
<li>Total Number of people who signed up for Your Big Beautiful Book Plan party –<strong> 181 people</strong>.<strong> </strong>Average number of followers per person – 1,731. That’s a possible reach of 313,311 people.</li>
</ul>
<p>Now I want to tell you a little bit about what we were able to accomplish.</p>
<p><strong>Sales Success</strong></p>
<p>We increased Danielle and Linda’s sales by 32% from the week before the party and we sustained the sales for the next week too. The party’s results exceeded my expectations.</p>

<p>First I want to talk about the promotion of the party. This is where, like any event, you need to have a launch plan. A system that slowly ramps up the touch points until you hit a crescendo that people can’t resist.</p>
<p>You have to be strategic in how you let people know about the party. You can’t just announce it and expect people to show up. You need to build anticipation a few days before the event, get them all excited then give them the details. I found that creating a marketing timeline really helps clients understand when to post to social media, their blog and newsletter to get the best results.</p>
<p>Second thing that Danielle and Linda did well was put a lot of passion behind their promotion. They let their audience know that they were in for a special treat. Once people realized that they were in for an amazing event the buzz on Twitter and Facebook took off.</p>
<p>Third thing that Danielle and Linda did well was have fun at the party. They weren’t worried about the tweets. They were focused on telling great stories and building a stronger relationship with their audience. You could see how well the audience responded. They stayed on the call, tweeted long after the party was over and really enjoyed themselves.</p>
<p><strong>Marketing Ripple Effect</strong></p>
<p>Twitter parties give you a boost in sales and you also get more Twitter followers, email sign-ups and viewers on your website.</p>
<p>That’s the type of marketing that will pay for itself for many months. If you can keep their attention then you will most certainly sell even more products next time you launch something. Most online business owners know that every launch and micro-event only builds their reputation. When you create something worthy of sharing with their friends then it becomes an event that can go viral.</p>
<p><strong>No Hard Sell</strong></p>
<p>There are a lot of ways to create buzz around what you do, but it’s hard to actually get the buzz to a level that registers on enough people’s radar. That’s why the social component of an event is so crucial to getting the word out.</p>
<p>We created a panel discussion with Danielle and Linda with me as the moderator. My amazing assistant ran the <a href="http://twitter.com/partybizconnect">@partybizconnect</a> Twitter account. We created a clear and easy to use hashtag, which is very is important. If it’s too long then people can’t jump into the conversation very easily.</p>

<p>There’s no hard sell in a Twitter party. You talk about your topic, you send out targeted tweets about your product between the questions and conversations, you deliver a lot of value and let people talk about it. It’s not just some sales pitch to buy your product. It’s a chance to come and hang out with you, learn from you, win a few prizes, meet new people and just have some fun.</p>
<p>It also makes it easier for other people to help you promote the party. Of course they want to tell their friends about a fun online event. It’s a win-win for everyone.</p>

<p>So many small business owners hate the idea of sales because they&#8217;ve been conditioned to look at it in all the wrong ways. It&#8217;s a sacred process that goes back thousands of years.</p>
<p>If you really break down the process of buying something it&#8217;s not so bad. Let&#8217;s say you walk into a store for a new pair of shoes. You are there because your old ones are breaking down. You need a new pair of shoes. After you buy the shoes, you are happy. You have a new pair of kicks to run around in. You actually enjoyed paying for the shoes because you know you needed them.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s all the sales process is, making sure you make the buyer feel like they got the better end of the deal.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Webinars are great tools for most business owners. You can create a free or paid version. I usually suggest to my clients that they start by creating free webinars, so they can get a handle on them. They are an art and a science mixed together.</p>
<p>A webinar is usually live presentations where the viewers can watch your computer screen and listen to your voice. It&#8217;s one of the most dynamic and best teaching tools being used today.</p>
<p>I wanted to bring in a special guest, for the <a href="http://tweetchat.com/room/mktgchat">#mktgchat</a> that I hold every Tuesday on Twitter at 2pm EST (11am PST). <a href="http://chrisg.com" target="_blank">Chris Garrett</a> was the right person for the job. Chris is down to earth, super smart and very caring. Oh and he&#8217;s been helping people with webinars for years.</p>

<p>I loved how Chris described webinars as an events because that&#8217;s exactly what they are. It&#8217;s a live event that can really engage people when done well.</p>

<p>Knowing what your audience wants out of a webinar is very important. If you don&#8217;t deliver on their expectations then you won&#8217;t increase your authority in your niche or sell any products. Before you even create a webinar you should ask your audience what they are struggling with then craft a webinar around this issue.</p>

<p>Creating an engaging webinar is just as hard as creating an engaging speech. When I first started doing webinars a lot of people would leave or click away from the screen. It&#8217;s your job to keep them excited and looking forward to what you are going to say next. Chris nailed it with his last tweet. Being a good story teller is very important to keeping people tuned into your webinar. A good story sucks people in and peaks their curiosity and convinces them that they want more from you.</p>

<p>This question came out of the conversation and Chris gave out some amazing responses. My favorite is the Story formula. You have to create a hook with a situation for a compelling character (usually you). What was your challenge and how did you overcome this obstacle. The last part would then be the &#8220;sales&#8221; portion of the webinar, showing people how they can be this same character that finds happiness, makes sales, or whatever you are trying to teach and sell.</p>
<p>I love that <a href="http://aliventures.com" target="_blank">Ali Luke</a> was asking a question about garnering responses from people. Because the more you can get people to ask questions on the webinar the more likely you can answer their objections and turn them into buyers, that is if you are selling something.</p>

<p>Promoting a webinar can be a little tricky. It depends on your audience. That&#8217;s why I liked Gemma Weirs question about blogging possibly working in different niches.</p>
<p>Your audience is different from everyone else&#8217;s don&#8217;t assume email will work the best. Try different promotion techniques and see what works best for you.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m a fan of offering bonuses at the end of a webinar, but like Chris said just don&#8217;t make this so important that it distracts people from the webinar. A bonus is nice, but make it a surprise, you&#8217;ll get people who really want your information on the webinar and reward them with a surprise that will make them feel special.</p>
<p>Delivering on your promise is very important. If you don&#8217;t walk away from the webinar without thinking you gave too much away then you didn&#8217;t give enough value. People will buy because they trust that you know what you are talking about and that your product will help them. They won&#8217;t buy if you were too mysterious or too salesy.</p>

<p>This opening question really got the chat started. Too often we write the landing page for ourselves instead of our ideal customers. That&#8217;s why getting feedback is crucial so you know if you are hitting your &#8220;ideal&#8221;customer right in the heart, creating an emotional connection.</p>

<p>Your landing page is yours. You have to think about what you want people to do. If you want them to give you their email so you can deepen the relationship, you have to be clear on why it&#8217;s worth it to them. Even a page that doesn&#8217;t give them all the information, but causes them to want more, must let them know what they are getting into if they give you their email.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Q3</strong> What do you suggest someone does before they start writing their copy for their landing page?</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Every great landing page that does the heavy lifting, to close the sale, on a consistent basis, must be well planned out. That means really looking at who your audience is and what benefit they will get from taking action on what you are asking them to do. Once you can answer:</p>

<li>Who is this landing page for?</li>
<li>Why would they read my landing page?</li>
<li>What do they want out of the landing page?</li>
<li>What do I want them to do before they leave the landing page?</li>
</ol>
<p style="text-align: left;">Then you are ready to create your landing page.</p>

<p>A simple landing page with straight forward reasons converts well because people know what they are getting themselves into. If you can&#8217;t be straight forward and honest with what you are offering, you are going to have a hard time getting people to take the next step.</p>

<p>Every great copywriter understands that their first version won&#8217;t be perfect. It&#8217;s all a part of the creative process. Testing to see what is working and what isn&#8217;t is a time honored marketing tradition. So use the tools out there like <a href="www.google.com/websiteoptimizer" target="_blank">Google Website Optimizer</a>. It&#8217;s what I use on my landing pages. There are other options out there, but it&#8217;s the best with the lowest pricetag (free!).</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Sarah said it best in her tweet, &#8220;Images that are intentionally chosen; as designer Paula Scher says, &#8220;branding&#8221;, not &#8220;blanding.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Use specific images that add to the landing page&#8217;s over all theme and effect. If you can add images that entice and delight then you are winning the attention battle. They are more likely to take action on what you want them to do next.</p>
